Newberry is in every way worthy of being classed among th e prosperous planters of Greene County, Ark. He was born in Weakley County, West Tenn ., in 1852, and was the sixth of eleven children born to Samuel and Nancy (Trant ham) Newberry, the former a native of North Carolina, and the latter of Tenness ee. I 1854 they moved to Greene County, Ark., and settled near the farm on whi ch W. C Newberry is now residing, where they entered land and resided until their respective deaths, the father's demise occurring in February, 1874, and th e mother's in 1883. They took quite an important part in the early histo ry of the country, and the father assisted in organizing the county. W. C. Newberry received his early education in the district schools of Greene County, a nd aide at home in opening up his father's farm. He was married in Greene Count y, in 1872, to Miss Martha Jane McHaney, who was born in Arkansas, and is a daug hter of John and Sally (Sims) McHaney, Tennesseeans. Mr. Newberry soon locat ed on hi present farm of 120 acres, about fifty-five acres of which he has clear ed and put under cultivation. He has added to his original purchase until he n ow has 200 acres of as good land as there is in the county, with 110 under the pl ow, the principal products of which are corn and cotton. Mr. Newberry is indep endent in politics, and is not an office-seeker. In 1874 he lost his wife, and fo ur years later he was married to Mary H. Hartsoe, of Arkansas. His first uni on was blessed by one son, Samuel; and his last by four children: Luther, Clifton , Charley and Tyler. His wife is a daughter of William and Sarah (McFarland) Hartsoe, who came to Arkansas at an early day. The father is still livin g, but the mother is deceased. Mr. Newberry has been active in aiding all laudabl e enterprises, and is one of the self made men of the county. Born June 6, 1904 at Taylorville the son of Milton and Minnie Hedges Nort on he was a member of the first Baptist Church at Tiskilwa. Surviving are his widow Lillie Livesay Norton one son Richard of Peoria th ree grandchildren five brothers, Roy of Wyanet, Russell and Eugene bo th of Princeton. Also surviving are five sisters Mrs Foy Miller Vandalia, Mrs Velma Anders on of Wyanet, Mrs Forrest (Nessie) Nordstrom and Mrs. Floyd (Fern)_ Dickin son both of Princeton. Funeral services were held at 1:30 pm Saturday at the F irst Baptist Church in Tiskilwa. Rev. Frank Paddock officiating. Burial w as in Elm Lawn Memorial Park. Mr. Norton was born April 9, 1903 in Taylorville a son of Milton and Minn ie Hedges Norton. He resided in the Dressor community for many years aft er the family moved here. He married Theresa Muck of Ramsey Feb. 15,19 28 in Vandalia. They lived here a few years but had farmed near Tiskil wa since 1939 brfore retiring two years ago.
