There were no finance companies in those days, each dealer financed each car he sold. He went broke eventually, but was always proud that he did not take bankruptcy and went out of business not owing anyone a penny. He worked for the state as a tax auditor for a few years, before having a stroke that paralysed him from the waist down. Two years later a second stroke killed him. Grover also worked for his father in the stave and lumber business. Information from JOYCE MYERS BRADLEY in 1976. !From Obit, Piggott Times July 1941: States born in Ohio Sep 8, 1885. [1mchaney.ged] !Not sure of birth place. Very active in lumber business. !Comprehensive article published in The Piggott Times, Wednesday, Jan 21, 1987; ".....Myers was born in 1851 inUpper Sandusky, Ohio, son of Michael and Susan McLean Myers....moved (to Piggott) in 1886....In 1910 he organized the Myers Stave & Mfg Co, one of the largest in the state which he operated in connection with the timber interest....At time of his death he was President of the Arkansas Telephone Company and the Clay County Bank..... !Following is from JOYCE MYERS BRADLEY in 1976: "I have reason to think both Myers and Bairs originated in Pennsylvania, moved to Ohio, bought neighboring farms. It is possible that Grandpa and Grandma married before the families moved from PA." In another letter to GAILON McHaney JOYCE said: "Grandpa Myers lived on a neighboring farm and he courted Grandma with a guitar (farm in Ohio). I believe they went to Cairo, IL soon after they married and all the children were born in Cairo. Life was pretty rough for them in Cairo. Daddy (GROVER MYERS) got up before daylight to sell papers on the street and sometimes that little bit of money was all they had to live on. But Granpa was a hard worker and had a good business mind and soon he was making money and moved the family to St Francis (ARK). Uncle Mac (your DAD) came to St Francis as a school master, courted Aunt GAil and they were married. (Note from GAILON McHANEY: This should be Piggott Ark not St Francis Ark.) !JOYCE MYERS BRADLEY wrote the following June 10, 1990:"When the family lived in Cairo, Illinois, Grandpa came back down here (Piggott) and there was a whole year he was not able to send any money home. Daddy (Grover) was 10 years old. He got up at 3 every morning and went out and sold Grit papers until time for school. Gail put on Ralph's clothes and went with him until she got caught. (It was unheard of for a girl to work outside the home). After that she would get up and cook oats for Daddy. Daddy went to sleep a lot in classes and one ole' teacher would hit him on the hands with the sharp edge of a ruler to wake him up and punish him. She damaged his hands and made permanent knots on the backs of his hands. His hands hurt him all of his life, especially in cold weather. After Grandpa got going he made lots of money, but for a whole year all the income the family had was the money Daddy made selling Grit. This teacher not only damaged Dad's hands but damaged him emotionally too, I think. We made a life long effort to stop physical abuse by teachers (spanking, slaps, whippings, etc) in Arkansas but have gotten no where except nearly getting into a fight with a teacher in a beauty shop who was bragging about her big paddle with holes in it and how she laid it on. I was really scared but I didn't back down." !From "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of NE Arkansas" 1889 Goodspeed Publishing Co. via Mac Bennett: JM Myers, Mayor of St Francis, Ark, and one of the most enterprising men of the town, was born in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and is the son of Michael Myers, who came with his father from Pennsylvania. Settling in Ohio and was there married to Miss Susan McClane, a native of Ohio....JM Myers remained in Sandusky until 1886 when he came to St Francis, where he engaged in the lumber business and has continued this calling since...He is owner of 380 acres of land in his native state, and 8000 acres of timber and coal land in Morgan County, Kentucky...After arriving in Clay County, Arkansas, Mr. Myers joined the firm of Jubvenall, Myers, & Co...operating Mr Rosengrant's mill...Afterward in company with WS Byron, of St Louis, he built a mill and opened under the firm name of J.M. Myers & Co. This he still continues and has now completed one of the largest and best equipped mills in the state. When the town of St Francis was organized in 1888 Mr. Myers was elected to the office of mayor to fill the interim until the first municipal election, when he was reelected and is now holding that position to the entire satisfaction of all concerned. He has built, in addition to the two mills, the finest residence in the county...Although not a member of any church he has assisted materially in the building of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, to which he contributed bery liberally. He was married in Ohio to Miss Ella Bair, who came from Pennsylvania with her parents, Jacob and Amy (Uber) Bair, a number of years ago. To Mr and Mrs Myers have been born five children, Edith Floy, Sadie Grace, Gail Roena, Grover C, and an infant unnamed. Mr Myers is a Democrat in politics. Parents: Michael Myers and Susan Mcclaine McLean. He was married to Ella Miriam Bair in 1879.
