Of all the honored vete rans in Greene county none perhaps are more deserving of notice in this co lumn than the above named gentleman. Born in Wilson county, Tenn, June 22 nd, 1819, of poor but respectable parents, it will be readily understood t hat opportunities for the acquirement of knowledge were very limited, as t he schools of that day were confined to those who were the possesse rs of a sufficiency of this worlds goods to pay handsomely for the sam e. He was reared on the farm in the usual manner and pursued that li ne of life in his native state until the year 1838, when a desire to be t- ter his condition financially caused him to leave his native state a nd seek wealth and name in other climes. He emigrated to Illinois, stoppi ng in Marion County, where for four years he pursued the avocation of farm ing, when he returned to his native state. He was united in marriage wi th Miss Sallie Sims January the 31st, 1843. Seven children have blest th is union, four boys and three girls, all of whom have joined the silent ma jority except one. Mr. McHaney with a view to the future made his seco nd trip to Illinois in May 1843, locating in the same neighborhood in whi ch he had lived dur- ing his former residence in that state and pursued farming with all prospects of success until 1845 when protracted s ickness of both himself and family caused him to leave and again take up a residence in the state of his birth, settling in Gibson co unty, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits with success, nothing outs ide of the ordinary occurences transpiring until 1861, when he with his fa mily emigrated to this county, landing on the farm where he now resides, f ive miles north of this city, January the 18th, 1861. When war betwe en the states came on Mr. McHaney cast his fortures with the Stars and Bars and entered Col. Kitchens regiment, c ommanding a company and served with credit to himself and satisfaction to those associated with him. When peace once more blest t he land he returned to his home and family and began again the batle of re deeming his plantation from the wild- erness to which it had in part falle n. Mr. McHaney was deprived by the hand of death of the assistance of t he partner of his joys and trials in March 1870, lived single for a time w hen he was united in marriage with Mrs. Amanda Sherer, with whom he now lives. There have been born of this union two bo ys and two girls, three of whom are now living. Mr. McHaney has been moderately successful in accumulation of this worlds goods and n ow when the shady side of life has been reached he finds himself blest wi th a sufficient conpetency to make his last days pleasant. Mr. McHaney h as been an honored member of the order of Masonry for more than thirty yea rs and a member of the Baptist church for more than fifty years. In pol itics he is a democrat and believes that the next greatest duty to attendi ng church duties incumbent on a good citizen is that of exercising his rig hts of suffrage at the polls. !Marriage date to Sarah Sims shown as 31 Jan 1845 in LDS microfische at L DS Church in FWB,FL.
