SALEM - Alonzo H. "Barney" McHaney, 67, of Salem, formerly of Odin died ea rly today at twin Willows nursing Center in Salem.

He was born in 1911, son of James R. McHaney and Beulah (Scott) McHane y. He was an oil field worker most of his life. Survivors include his wif e, Agnes, of Salem four sons, Lonnie McHaney of Mount Vernon, Lyn McHan ey of Edgewood, Lance McHaney of Houston Tx. and Randy McHaney of Apache O k. one brother, Kenneth McHaney of Houston Tx., one sister Eva Mae Carlt on of Houston and three grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Wilson Funeral Home in Odin. Parents: James Rollin McHaney and Beulah Scott.

Children were: Lynn McHaney, Lance McHaney, Randy McHaney , Lony McHaney.

indicated that she married JOHN MAY TAYLOR SR and that they had one

BIOGRAPHY: 1. Pension Claim #38931, under name of "McMahan." Enlist ed in King
and Queen Co., Virginia, in winter of 1776, and served three years in Capt ains
William Campbell's and Thomas Hamilton's Companies, Colonel Gibson's Virgi nia
Regiment, at the expiration of which he enlisted in Colonel George Baylor' s
Regiment of Dragoons, he was in the battles of Monmouth, Camden, Guilfor d, and
Eutaw Springs, and was discharged June 12, 1783. He was allowed pensi on on his
application executed August 18, 1819, while a resident of Wilson County,
Tennessee, aged fifty-eight years, at which time he was living with two
unmarried daughters, on his son William's la. Son William was twenty-ni ne years
old in 1819. In 1820, soldier referred to his daughter, Polly, as aged
twenty-two or twenty-three years old. There is no data on file as to h is wife

McMahan: Upon application it was confirmed by son William and another gen tlema
(see "pension.doc") that Andrew and his brothers had always been known as
'McMahan," and that "McHaney" was adopted by the children later. At the t ime o
these depositions, William was known as "McHaney," but the judge did not a sk
HIM, apparantly, why the name had changed!

!ANDREW MC MAHAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION (Abstracted by
Mrs Edwin H. Smith) No. S 38931 Applied from Wilson Co., Tenn on Aug
9, 1820. 10 pages Pensioner is blind and aged about 58. He lives with
his two unmarried daughters on his son's land in Wilson Co., 18 miles
southeast of Lebanon. Later he says his family consists of only one
daughter ages about 22-23 named Polly. (Perhaps one daughter married
while he was corresponding about his pension.)

!William McMahan, aged 29, is a son of Andrew. William is "otherwise
called" William McHaney and is a Baptist. Aug 18, 1819.

!Jesse Hadges, aged 65, knew Andrew McMahan in Pittsylvania Co., Va.
He was acquainted with Andrew's brothers "known by the name" McMahan."
After some time the name became adulterated and the young generation
descended from these brothers were frequently called McHaney." Aug 25
1819.

deed of 17 May 1866, named heirs of ANDREW McHaney. Included was
Bathena/ Barthena HORSEMAN, an heir. Who were her parents?? She was
b ca 1825 MO, m to JAMES HORSEMAN, who apparently died bef Sep 1872,
as he is not named while other husbands were named. James had been m
before & had 2 sons, Charles b ca 1836 & Edward b ca 1839. Ch by
Bethena were JOHN, JAMES & WILLIAM. But who were parents of this
Bethena?

Greenglade Rd, NE Atlanta GA 30345, dtd 23 Nov 1987. He found bk
Ka-Mi-Akin in Portland OR library. "Records that I found in OR show
that BETHENA SPLAWN was a very interesting person. She was b in
Pittslvania Co VA in 1811. She m MAYBERRY SPLAWN in Ray Co MO on 20
Oct 1826. This recorded in Ray Co court- house...Mayberry and his f
built the first cabin in Daviess Co in 1830. There are deed records in
th Daviess Co Cthse that show that they bought and sold other
land.....prior to 1850 they mved to Holt Co MO. In a sworn statement
that is part of her application for an OR Donation Land Claim, Bethena
stated....she and her husb left Holt Co MO on 7 May 1852; he took sik
with cholera on the 15th and died on the morning of the 17 May 1852,
one day travel from the Platte R on the Iowa Mission Rd; they crossed
the Mo R at Iowa Point; they had 7 ch. I found it interesting that B
signed this statement on 20 Nov 1853 as Beththena Splawn with an X,
her mark. In Sep 1857, Bethena filed another doc written in her
handwritting. She spelled her name Bethena and signed B. Splawn. It
appears that she learned to write after she arrived in OR. This 2d
doc shows that Mayberry died on the waters of the Little Blue R (prob
in Nebraska)...In OR Bethena had 2 marriages and 2 divorces...The long
letter contains much more. Parents: Andrew J. McHaney and Polley Collins.

AL. Believe her name was really CALIFORNIA. By letter dtd 20 June,
1992 Frank Rodman says he found a descendant of CALIFORNIA McHANEY in
Loxley, AL. Rodman reported contact with Herman Roberts, Rt. 1, Box
54, Toxey, AL 36921, a grand- son of Callie. Parents: Joseph McHaney and Eliza Williams.
