She worked in the Peoria Public School System for more than 20 years and w as a cafeteria worker at Peoria High School before retiring in 1977. She w as a member of First United Methodist Church and American Association of R etired Persons. Born July 25, 1915 in Patoka, a daughter of Clinton O. and Elvira McHan ey Livesay, she Married E. Dale Whitehurst Aug 16, 1934 in Vernon. He di ed July 6, 1971 in Peoria. Surviving are one son D. Duayne of Titusvill e, N. J. , one daughter Mrs Shelia Pocklington of Quincy, Four sisters Mr s. Phyllis Jerningan of Vernon, Mrs. Lillie Norton and Mrs Frances Thompso n, both of Patoka and Mrs Estelle Slavik of Melbourne Beach Fl. She was preceded in death by two children in infancy and three brothers. S ervices will be at 7 pm tomorrow at Wilton Mortuary the Rev. John H. Stanl ey officiating. Further services will be at 11 am Saturday at Cox and Mar tin Funeral Home, Patoka where visitation will be forom 6 to 9 pm Friday The Rev. USS SAVANNAH KHIT BY BOMB IN SALERNO BATTLE Washington, Nov. 3 -- (AP) -- Hit by a German bomb off Salerno, the lig ht cruiser Savannah was damaged and some members of her crew were killed a nd wounded, the Navy has announced. The bomb landed atop a gun turret. Flames started by the explosion were b rought under control in 20 minutes while Navy doctors were treating the wo unded men. The ship carried on in support of the landing troops and conti nued to operate effectively, the Navy reported. OBITUARY: Sherman Alfred Livesay, 56, Vernon died Wednesday at the Veterans Hospoit al in Marion where he had been a patient three weeks. He served with the Navy 20 years and had been in the Fleet Reserve since 1 960. Mr Livesay was born at Patoka the son of C.O. and Elvira (McHaney) L ivesay. He married Bonnie Lawson at Philadeiphia, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Patoka American Legion and the Olney VFW. Survivo rs are his father C.O. Livesay of Vernon two daughters Mrs Laura Jones a nd Mrs Susan Hamilton both of Elmhurst N.Y., and five brothers. Funeral services were at 1 pm Sunday in the Cox-Martin Funeral Home. Re v. Livesay, 61 of Vernon died in the Veteran's Hospital in St. Lou is Thursday following a long illness. Funeral services were held Sund ay at 1 o'clock at the Cox & Martin funeral home with the Rev Clifford New comb officiating. burial was in the Patoka cemetery. He was employed by the Patoka township road department and was a memb er of the American Legion in Vandalia and the Centralia V.F.W. He had liv ed in Vernon for 31 years. He married in 1919 to Iona McKee in Wichita Ka nsas. He served as a private in World War I with Company C of the Kansas infant ry as a cook and also fought in the battle of the Meuse-Argonne where he w as wounded, He served overseas one and a half years and later served wi th the Corps of Engineers in Alaska. He was discharged Oct. 1919. He is survived by his father of Vernon, a son William O Jr, of Harvey t wo daughters Mrs Betty Jones of Patoka and Mrs Margaret Smith of Indianapo lis Ind, six brotheres gerald of Salem Glenn of Harvey Sherman Allen and H arold who are serving with the United States Navy and Clarence of Granit e, five sister Phyllis Jernigan of St Louis Mrs Estelle Slavik of Fent on Mo Mrs Dial Thompson of Calhoun Mrs Elizaabeth Whitehurst of Peoria a nd Mrs Lillie Norton of Princeton.
